Abstract

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health problem that affects millions of people around the world, including Ecuador. CKD not only has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, but also imposes a substantial economic and social burden on healthcare systems. In this context, transplant activity has become a vital treatment option for patients with CKD in advanced stages. Methodology: A quantitative, observational, descriptive study was carried out, with a cross-sectional cohort design, with the objective of knowing the situational status of chronic kidney disease in the country. The analysis was performed based on descriptive statistics. Result: In Ecuador, during the year 2022, five hundred and ninety-seven (N:597) transplants of organs, tissues, and cells were performed. The rate of kidney transplants per million inhabitants (TMTT) in 2022 was 8.34. From January to May 2023, the number of kidney transplants performed was sixty-four (N: 64). Conclusions: At the moment there are eighteen thousand eighty-six (N:18,086) patients in renal replacement therapy but only eight hundred thirty-five (N:835) are registered in the LEUN awaiting a kidney transplant. This indicates that only 4% of dialysis patients are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.
