La lactancia materna o el uso de leche humana (LH) constituyen el estándar normativo de nutrición del recién nacido y del lactante. Organismos académicos y profesionales recomiendan la lactancia materna exclusiva durante los primeros 6 meses de vida y luego, junto con la introducción de alimentos apropiados, puede prolongarse hasta los dos años de edad o más. Similar recomendación, con alto nivel de evidencia, se aplica también para los recién nacidos de muy bajo peso al nacer.
