Introduction: In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the new disease called COVID-19 a pandemic. Until the end of 2020, approximately 1.8 million deaths have been recorded worldwide. The objective of this study is to estimate and analyze the years of life lost prematurely by COVID-19 in Ecuador. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive observational study. It was calculated from the database of the Statistical Registry of General Deaths of the year 2020 in Ecuador, the mortality rate, both by sex and by age groups. And the Years of life lost prematurely (YLL) due to COVID-19 were estimated in that period. Results: 23.789 confirmed and unconfirmed COVID-19 deaths were recorded. Mortality rates per 1.000 inhabitants were 1,8 in men and 0,9 in women. In the end, 296.193 years of life were lost prematurely. Conclusions: COVID-19 has affected all age groups and has caused a great loss of years of healthy life in the Ecuadorian population, which has repercussions on the country's productivity and therefore on its economy.
