Abstract

The interesting article “Surgical thyroid pathology, Hospital Metropolitano, January 2017 – June 2022”1 constitutes an additional contribution to the knowledge of a very common pathology in our country. In fact, the incidence of thyroid cancer is currently the most common malignant neoplasm in women in Quito2. The number of thyroid surgeries of approximately 82 per year is very important for a private hospital in our environment. 69% of patients at the Metropolitan Hospital were operated on for malignant disease, when in the United States only 26% of the 220,088 patients who underwent thyroid surgery between 2007 and 2018 were for malignancy3. Another interesting aspect is the type of surgery. A total thyroidectomy was performed in 86% of interventions. In the United States, following the recommendations of the American Thyroid Association's Thyroid Nodule Management Guidelines, there is a trend towards an increase in partial surgery in both benign and malignant diseases, and in 2018, 28% of surgeries for cancer was a lobectomy4.
