Abstract

In 1991, during my first year of residency, I began using a personal computer to write some papers, including a narrative review on short stature, which was published in the Bulletin of the School of Medicine of the university where I trained1, and the presentation of a clinical case of chylothorax, published in a Chilean journal called “Pediatría al Día”2. At that time, access to the Internet was not easy; the connection was physical, through a cable, and the information had to be loaded into the computer mostly using diskettes. In any case, the computer was very useful, as it continues to be today, for the development of the text, data analysis, and preparation of tables and figures. The later addition of grammar and spelling checkers, spreadsheets, presentation design, and basic statistics programs increased the intelligence of researchers and are now routinely used tools enhanced by fast wireless Internet connections.
