Abstract

When performing ceramic veneers, dentists usually consider the tooth color and the type of cement but often overlook the adhesive, despite differences among these materials. Aim: To evaluate color changes in laminate veneers using different universal adhesives before and after accelerated aging. Materials and Methods: An in vitro experimental study was conducted with 40 upper incisors made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), on which laminate veneers were bonded using four universal adhesives: Optibond FL, Scotchbond Universal, Tetric N-Bond Universal, and Ambar Universal. Color measurements were performed using digital spectrophotometry with the CIELab system, both before and after thermocycling. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, Tukey’s test, and Student’s t-test (p<0.05). Results: Prior to aging, veneers exhibited clinically unacceptable color changes (ΔEab ≥ 3.3), with Tetric N-Bond Universal showing the greatest alterations in L*, a*, and b*, indicating higher luminosity and greenish-yellow tones. After accelerated aging, the ΔE values were: Ambar Universal (ΔE=1.95) < Scotchbond Universal (ΔE=2.26) < Tetric N-Bond Universal (ΔE=2.59) < Optibond FL (ΔE=2.83), representing perceptible but clinically acceptable changes. Statistically significant differences were observed in ΔL and Δb among adhesives following thermocycling. Conclusion: Universal adhesives influence the color of laminate veneers. While they induce perceptible changes, these remain clinically acceptable after accelerated aging, highlighting the importance of considering the adhesive in restorative aesthetic planning.
