Introduction: Microscopic colitis is a common cause of non-inflammatory chronic diarrhea, more common in women around 55 years of age, whose diagnosis is based on the study of colonoscopy biopsy samples, with lymphocytic or collagen variants. The objective of this work is to establish the prevalence of the disease in the Metropolitan Hospital and to identify the risk factors associated with the disease. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study. A review of the clinical history of all patients diagnosed with unspecified colitis and enteritis was performed with colonoscopy at our institution between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2019. Results: The prevalence of microscopic colitis was 12.3% with a predominance of lymphocytic colitis (11.0%). 74.3% of the subjects were female. The mean age of the patients with microscopic colitis was 41 years and the mean number of diarrhea was 4.9. Most of the participating subjects had obesity above 30 kg / m2 (83.4%), however, this condition was not associated with microscopic colitis. There was a significant statistical difference in the number of diarrhea between patients with microscopic colitis and those with other types of colitis. It was shown that having more than 5 diarrhea is a risk factor (OR = 7.79), with people with more than 5 diarrhea being 7 times more likely to have microscopic colitis. Conclusions: The prevalence of microscopic colitis was 12.8%, with more frequent appearance in women. It was evidenced that more than 5 diarrhea could be related to the presence of this disease.
