Abstract

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or fibromyomas, are the most common benign solid tumors in the uterus. Their prevalence has been underestimated since studies focus on symptomatic women; it varies depending on the region, country, diagnostic method and the population studied, between 5% to 60% of women have fibroids, and 30% of these produce symptoms such as abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain or a sensation of pelvic heaviness1.
